FAQ about OpenAthens - Registration

I am new to Navy OpenAthens accounts. Where do I register for an OpenAthens account?

Use the link below on a Defense Health Agency (DHA-networked) computer.

Can I register from anywhere?

You must register on a Defense Health Agency (DHA) networked computer. To complete the second activation step, you will also need access to your health.mil email account.

Should I get a Naval Medical Center Portsmouth OpenAthens account or a Navy Medicine Electronic Library OpenAthens account?

If you are affiliated with Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP), you will get access to more resources through NMCP OpenAthens compared to the Navy Medicine Electronic Library OpenAthens.

If you are not affiliated with NMCP, you must choose Navy Medicine Electronic Library, Naval Medical Center San Diego Remote Access (for NMC San Diego affiliates), or Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Remote Access (for Walter Reed NMMC affiliates).

I had an OpenAthens account with another naval facility. Should I register for a new account?

No! Contact the following email and request to have your account transferred to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP).

email email Navy Medicine Electronic Library

Had an OpenAthens account with another service branch? Email below for instructions about your old account.

email email Army Medical Department (AMEDD) Virtual Library

email email Air Force Medical Service (AFMS) Virtual Library

Once I complete the second step of registration, how can I access resources?

Use the link below!

I signed up with my mail.mil email. Do I need to change my email in the system?

OpenAthens automatically changed "mail.mil" email addresses to the "health.mil" equivalent. If you want to tie the account to a personal email address: log in to OpenAthens with your "health.mil" address, select the My Account tab and enter your new email address (two times). Remember, your account is not switched until you follow the activation link in the email from noreply@openathens.net.

FAQ about OpenAthens - Troubleshooting

My OpenAthens account says it expired. How can I renew it?

Access the following link on a DHA-networked computer. Remember, your account is not renewed until you follow the activation link in the email from noreply@openathens.net.

I think my OpenAthens expired more than 90 days (3 months) ago. Should I still use self-renewal?

No! Contact NMCP Library Services at
